Cheryl (Prairie Song Candles) from www.theprairiemaid.blogspot. com
According to my blogger profile, I am wife (37 years to my honey hunk!), mother (of 3 grown children and 2 who think they are grown… 13 and 14 y/o’s), and Mamaw to eleven beautiful (no, I am not partial) grand babies. We live out past the sidewalks on a small homestead in rural Oklahoma, where we raise dairy goats, horses, chickens, dogs, cats and one pig. I laugh when I tell people they have to watch out for our motion detector animals. They are much more intrusive than motion detector lights! Our animals love company and are always eager to greet visitors.
A few years ago, our oldest daughter and I decided we wanted to start a cottage business. We looked at a number of possibilities; however, we realized we share the love of two things ~ reading and candles! Candles won. After doing the research, we made the decision to use soy wax.
Soy wax is one hundred percent natural. Unlike paraffin, with soy wax there is no need to chemically bleach the wax to achieve a product ready for crafting. The soy wax produces almost no soot which is much better for you, your family and pets, along with your home, as it contains NO chemical residue which can leach out when burned. For us, this was the main selling point. I have one grandson who suffers with asthma and with the soy wax he does not have a negative reaction.
Another selling point is the fact soy is produced from soybeans grown by American farmers, making it a renewable and sustainable resource. And soy candles have an incredible scent throw both hot and cold!
Along with using the soy wax, we use a 100% cotton wick, which is lead free. This keeps our fragrance scented candles, marketed under the name of Prairie Song, as natural as possible. Besides the Prairie Song line, we pour a completely natural candle that combines soy wax and essential oils. This line is called Territorial Lights and is popular with doctors of naturopathy, massage therapists and health food store owners. Each candle is hand poured with great care. For special occasions, we also pour bees wax and palm wax candles, both of which are also 100% natural. Bees wax produces an extremely firm candle that gives off the faint scent of honey. Like the bees wax, palm wax is also a firmer wax (than soy) and each individual candle takes on its own unique design. The appearance is a frosted look, almost like crushed glass.
Candle making is a wonderful and rewarding creative outlet. Over the years we have been featured in magazine articles and in radio interviews. We love sharing our knowledge and helping others to establish their own candle making business. Questions are always welcomed and you can reach us via my blog (theprairiemaid.blogspot.com)
